¡Que obsequio para su onomástico! Mañana Marcus Ehing cumple 36 años, y hoy se dio un regalo anticipado en la forma de la Copa del Mundo. A pesar de haber derribado una barra en la primera vuelta lo cual lo alejó aún más del líder que era Mario Deslauriers, logró dejar todo en su lugar en el segundo recorrido y sólo esperó a ver que pasaba con el ex canadiense. Y el jinete de Bromont que ahora representa a los Estados Unidos no pudo con la presión, a pesar de que con un derribe todavía lograría su segunda Copa del Mundo. Urico derribó no una sino tres, y todavía un punto más por exceso lo que lo mandaron a la sexta posición. Regalo de cumpleaños para el alemán que con ello logró su tercera Copa del Mundo. Ludger Beerbaum y el número uno del ranking, Pius Schwizer, empataron en el segundo lugar.

Sólo 29 obtuvieron el permiso para participar el domingo. Tristemente McLain Ward fue dejado en la banca por una decisión sin precedentes del jurado de campo. A pesar de que su yegua se veía bien y trotaba magníficamente, como lo demostró al quedar en segundo lugar los dos primeros días, el jurado decidió eliminar al duo de la competencia arguyendo una supersensibilidad en las manos de la yegua. Cincuenta y siete veces fue apretada y en tres ocasiones levantó la mano. Yo en las mismas circunstancias la hubiera levantado no tres, sino cien veces tres, ante tal invasión. Pero ello bastó para dejar al doble medallista olímpico relegado de la Final, una competencia que parecía nadie se la iba a quitar y con ello regresarla a Estados Unidos en dónde no ha podido llegar en dos décadas.

Rolf Ludi presentó dos pistas más que enfrentaron a los competidores con varias preguntas y en dónde varios binomios tuvieron faltas. Con sólo cuatro puntos de diferencia entre los primeros cuatro jinetes, en el primer recorrido Ehning no pudo evitar que su castrado holandés de nueve años, Urico, derribará el último obstáculo; un muro que tenía resaltada una vaca suiza. Pero antes el que iba en tercero, el suizo Schwizer, decapitó los desviadores, mientras que en cuarto lugar el francés Patrice Delaveau mandó una barra al suelo del oxer marcado con el número dos. Ehning bajó un peldaño, y Deslauriers se mantuvo, con pista sin faltas, en el liderato aumentando la diferencia a su favor.

Todo se derrumbó para el francés cuando Katchina Mall dejó dos en el suelo en la segunda vuelta, pero pistas sin faltas tanto de Ludger Beerbaum con la hija de Goldfever, Gotha y Pius Schwizer sobre su yegua de nueve años Carlina, los catapultaron a la cabeza esperando el resultado de Luciana Diniz, Ehning y del americano Deslauriers.

El semental de trece años del alemán se portó a la altura dejando todo en su lugar en esta ocasión. La portuguesa Diniz, con sólo un punto de desventaja sobre Ehning, vio perder la oportunidad cuando Winningmood mandó al suelo el vertical marcado con el número diez, el antepenúltimo de la pista. Urico voló con Marcus de pasajero. Así el ahora americano que ganó la Copa del Mundo hace veintiséis años para Canadá, tenía la encomienda de regresarla a los Estados Unidos en dónde la última vez que la ganaron fue hace veintidós años. Una barra todavía le permitiría lograr su cometido, pero Urico mandó tres al suelo cayendo al sexto lugar. En cambio el irlandés Dermott Lennon se catapultó del catorceavao al quinto, cuando logró un doble recorrido sin falta sobre Hallmark Elite. Lennon fue el ganador del Campeonato del Mundo hace ocho años en Jerez de la Frontera. Diniz, otra amazona que cambió recientemente de nacionalidad de la brasileira a la portuguesa, quedó justo debajo de los empatados Beerbaum y Schwizer, y Ehning logró la tercera Copa; Three is a charm.

Ehning decidió participar con Noltes Kuchegirl el primer día, en la velocidad, y cambió a Plot Blue para los siguientes dos días. Esto se permite únicamente en este formato de la Copa del Mundo, y en los más de treinta años de llevarse a cabo es el primer jinete que logra el triunfo absoluto con dos caballos distintos.

Ehning ahora se une al exclusivo grupo de centauros que han obtenido tres triunfos en la Copa del Mundo a través de los treinta y dos años de existencia. Los otros triple poseedores del ansiado título son Hugo Simón de Austria, Rodrigo Pessoa de Brasil y la californiana convertida en alemana Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum quien no pudo participar y defender su título obtenido el año pasado en Las Vegas pues apenas hace seis meses nació su bebé. Ehning ganó antes con Anka en Las Vegas en el 2003 y con Sandro Boy en Kuala Lumpur en el 2006.
